UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric criticized the recent rhetoric against the Islamic Republic of Iran and called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, An Iranian journalist in New York asked Dujarric during a press briefing: Iran’s representative to the UN has written a letter to the Secretary-General and the Security Council regarding foreign interference and U.S. threats, particularly from President Donald Trump, and incitement to violence against Iran. Foreign Minister Ebrahim Araghchi also announced that Iran has numerous documents indicating U.S. and Israeli involvement in terrorist activities within Iran. Dujarric replied that the letter would be distributed as requested.

Dujarric emphasized that they are very concerned about the bellicose rhetoric heard from various parties regarding the situation in Iran and called for a return to dialogue.

Responding to a question about whether the Secretary-General had spoken with senior Iranian officials, Dujarric said that Guterres had not yet spoken with anyone and would share any information with the press as soon as it became available.

Regarding the status of UN staff in Iran, he stated that some were working remotely and were all safe.

In response to a question about recent statements by the U.S. President against Iran, he said the rhetoric was concerning and that the Secretary-General encourages everyone to take the path of diplomacy and dialogue.

Regarding foreign interference in Iran’s affairs, he emphasized the importance of dialogue and the need for Iranians who wish to protest peacefully to do so, noting that the UN Charter is very clear on this matter.
