The gradual reopening of international internet access in Iran began on Thursday afternoon, with full nationwide connectivity expected within the next 24 hours, provided no new technical disruptions occur.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, Available information indicates that the easing of technical restrictions on international internet services initially started in the provinces of Isfahan and Fars and is now being rolled out step by step across the rest of the country. Sources familiar with the telecommunications sector say the phased approach is intended to prevent large-scale network disruptions while restoring user access.

At the same time, restrictions previously imposed on domestic platforms have been fully lifted since last week. In recent days, public access to several widely used websites and services—including the Google search engine and certain artificial intelligence platforms—has also been restored. However, platforms that had been blocked prior to the recent restrictions remain inaccessible.

Technical assessments suggest that, if current conditions persist, international internet access will be fully restored nationwide within 24 hours. The internet disruption began on the evening of Thursday, January 18, following coordinated attacks on a number of government, law enforcement, and administrative facilities. Officials cited security concerns and efforts to prevent the spread of unrest as the reason for the shutdown.

The gradual restoration of internet access has become a key concern for users and economic actors across Iran. Observers inside and outside the country are closely watching how the process is managed, viewing it as an important indicator of Iran’s broader approach to connectivity and digital policy.
