The Kremlin announced on Thursday that Russia maintains a firm expectation for political and diplomatic instruments to remain the “absolute priority” in resolving the ongoing situation surrounding Iran.

According to Khabaronline, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Moscow expects negotiations to prevail as the primary method for seeking a settlement. He further reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to expanding its bilateral relationship with the Islamic Republic.

Call for Regional Restraint

Speaking to reporters regarding the heightened tensions in the Middle East, Peskov urged all regional actors to exercise caution.

“Russia continues to develop its relations with Iran,” Peskov stated. “In doing so, we call upon our Iranian friends and all parties in the region to show restraint. Moscow expects that negotiations to resolve the situation surrounding Iran will yield results.”

The Kremlin official underscored that for the resolution of regional challenges, diplomatic channels must be treated as the primary course of action. “[Moscow] calls on [regional countries] to adopt political and diplomatic tools as an absolute priority in solving certain problems,” he added.

Pre-Planned Naval Maneuvers

Addressing the joint naval exercises currently being conducted by Russian and Iranian maritime forces, Peskov clarified that the drills were not a reactionary measure to recent events.

“These are planned exercises that were coordinated well in advance,” he told journalists, dismissing any notion that the timing was linked to current regional escalations.
