During the Eastern Europe tour of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, an agreement on building the Mehran 1,000MW power plant in west of Iran was signed between the Iranian and Romanian investors, an economic official has said.

Mohammad Azadi, a member of the economic delegation which accompanied Zarif during his Eastern Europe visits to Romania, Slovakia and Czech Republic, has referred to the Mehran power plant project as one of the outcomes of Zarif's tour.

Speaking to IRNA on Tuesday, Azadi said the Mehran project aims to export electricity to Iraq after becoming operational.

Through Mehran in the western Iranian province of Ilam, Iran has a border line with the neighboring country of Iraq.

In the next two months, in 2017, the Mehran 1,000MW power plant project will be launched, the official said, adding the project is planned to become operational in three years.

The project, as he said, will be carried out at a cost of over 700 million dollars, 70 percent of which will be provided by the Romanian side and the rest by Iran.

Zarif wrapped up his four-day Eastern European tour and returned to Tehran on Saturday morning (Nov 26).
