A senior Iranian lawmaker says the UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has visited Iran with the aim of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

“Brahimi has a sensitive duty as the UN Secretary General’s special envoy in Syria,” Chairman of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

The Iranian lawmaker added that since military operations have failed to resolve the crisis in Syria, Brahimi’s main mission would be to find a political solution out of the Arab country’s domestic crisis.

Boroujerdi also noted that Iran supports Syria because the Arab state has been at the frontline of resistance against the greed of the Zionist regime of Israel over the past years and this role should be enhanced.

He stated that in order to successfully accomplish his mission, Brahimi should pay attention to the domestic realities in Syria, the country’s national unity, and the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Tehran on Sunday for talks over the ongoing unrest in the Arab country.

During his visit, Brahimi will hold talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi over the escalating tension in Syria.

Iraqi premier’s spokesman Ali Mussawi said on Saturday that Brahimi will travel to Iraq after his visit to Iran to meet with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki over the 19-month unrest in Syria.

Western states have been calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, but Iran, Russia, and China are strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.
