"We are willing to meet with them in the very near future.... I hope we can have a meeting quite soon,” Amano said during a visit to London on Wednesday.
Amano’s remarks come after the European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday agreed on a new round of sanctions against Iran in spite of a UN warning against the humanitarian ramifications of the previous bans.
Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Monday that negotiations between Iran and five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (the P5+1) could move forward “very soon.”
“I absolutely do think there is room for negotiations. I hope we will be able to make progress very soon,” she stated.
The illegal US-engineered sanctions were imposed based on the unfounded allegation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran rejects the allegations and argues that as a committed signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of IAEA, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
