Assad made the remarks in a meeting with UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Damascus on Sunday.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed the developments in Syria and the efforts made by the UN envoy and the results of his latest tour to a number of region states.
President al-Assad stressed that Syria supports the efforts of the UN envoy, and that it is open to any efforts to find a political solution to the crisis based on respecting Syria's sovereignty and rejecting foreign interference.
President Assad clarified that any initiative or political process should be essentially based on ending terrorism, meaning that certain foreign countries should drop their support for terrorists and their arms shipments and harboring of the terrorists.
Following the meeting, Brahimi urged the two sides in the Syrian conflict to declare unilateral truce for this week's Muslim holidays.
Earlier on Saturday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mualem received Brahimi.
A statement issued by the Syrian foreign ministry following the meeting described the talks as "constructive" and "serious".
