“By imposing further sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, countries such as the US, Britain and France seek to divert the public opinion of their people,” said head of Iran Majlis (parliament) Research Center Kazem Jalali in a Monday interview.
The Iranian lawmaker stated that Western countries are not accountable for pressures which are exerted on their people and are trying to project their problems by imposing sanctions against Iran.
Jalili slammed West’s embargoes as “inhumane,” “undemocratic,” and “futile,” adding that the Iranian nation and government will not surrender to such pressures.
He was making the remarks in response to recent anti-Iran positions taken by French President Francois Hollande during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to France last week.
At a Wednesday joint press conference with Netanyahu, Hollande said that France supports further sanctions aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear activities, adding that Paris is ready to vote for other sanctions.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Under pressure from Washington, the United Nations Security Council has imposed four rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The Security Council's measure was followed by a series of illegal unilateral embargoes against Iran by the US and the European Union.
Iran refutes the allegations and argues that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
