Reuters claimed on Wednesday that the top Iranian diplomat put forward the proposal five months ago in a letter to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, calling for entering into ‘broad’ discussions with the US.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi later on Wednesday dismissed the allegation as baseless, calling it a kind of story-telling ahead of the upcoming presidential election in Iran.
It is not the first time that the West has made such claims to distract public opinion, the Foreign Ministry spokesman pointed out.
Iranians will go to the polls in the nation’s 11th presidential election on June 14.
Iran severed ties with the United States some 33 years ago.
