Deputy Head of Iran's Fishery Organization Hossein Abdolhay underlined that importance of protecting the Caspian Sea's live resources necessitates the littoral states to reach an all-out agreement to this end.

Speaking at the 34th meeting of the Caspian Sea live resources commission in Astrakhan Port of Russia on Friday, the Iranian official called for enhancement of cooperation among five littoral states of the Caspian Sea to protect live resources of the Sea.

Abdolhay said that the Caspian Sea belongs to its littoral states and these states should work together to maintain natural wealth of the sea.

In the 3-day meeting, representatives from the five littoral states of the Caspian Sea presented their own national reports to the commission.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea.

Caspian Sea littoral states consist of Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. They have been debating their share in the Caspian Sea legal regime since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
