A senior Iranian lawmaker condemned the militarization of the Syrian crisis by certain western and regional states, and called on the international bodies to support a workable solution to the Middle-Eastern country's crisis through diplomatic means.

Big powers, which militarized the Syrian crisis, have realized their mistakes after three years and now seek a political solution to it,” Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

The Iranian lawmaker added that major powers with the help of certain regional countries have militarized the crisis in Syria and caused the deaths of thousands of innocents in the country.

“The Syrian problem only has a political solution and Syria’s issues can (only) be resolved by Syrians,” the Iranian legislator pointed out.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
