Nowruz celebrated in Geneva

Iran and ten other countries celebrating Nowruz hosted a ceremony in the Swiss city of Geneva to mark the International Day of Nowruz .

The celebration was held in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, on Thursday. 

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is celebrated worldwide on the first day of spring (March 21). 

In 2009, Nowruz was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a festivity of rich diversity promoting peace and solidarity across regions and generations.

In addition, the UN General Assembly in 2010 called the 21st of March the International Day of Nowruz . 

Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh, the Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations Office at Geneva, on behalf of the 11 hosting countries, welcomed the participants of the ceremony in Geneva. 

In an address to the ceremony, Baghaei Hamaneh talked about the philosophy of Nowruz and the importance of making use of this ancient festivity to bolster solidarity, friendship and mutual respect. 

Over 2000 participants, including envoys and diplomats, officials and employees at international organizations as well as Iranians residing in Switzerland, were present at the ceremony. 

The 11 countries celebrating Nowruz are Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, India, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
