Normalizing ties with Iran, only way to save JCPOA: FM

Iranian foreign minister said on Thursday that normalizing relations with Tehran is the only way to save the nuclear deal, reached between Iran and G5+1 (US, UK, France, Russia, China plus Germany) in 2015.

The international community should normalize economic relations with Iran, if it wants to save the nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono in Tokyo, Zarif noted that he has explored avenues for saving the JCPOA during his meeting with the Japanese foreign minister.

The Japanese foreign minister said that his country is committed to the JCPOA and seeks to de-escalate tensions in the region, Zarif added.

'I explained to the Japanese foreign minister that Iran doses not seek tension in the region but Tehran will defend its rights powerfully,' he said.

Zarif arrived in Tokyo from New Delhi where he discussed bilateral issues and regional and international developments with senior Indian officials.
