Iran Formally Protests Trump’s New Threats

The Islamic Republic of Iran has formally protested recent statements and threats made by the President of the United States, conveying its objection through the United Nations.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN warned that if the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, population, or vital national interests are subjected to any further acts of aggression, Iran will exercise its legitimate right to self-defense in a firm and proportionate manner.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, objected to remarks made by the U.S. President during a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Israeli regime on 29 December 2025.

He described the remarks as provocative, escalatory, and explicitly involving threats of the use of force against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stressing that such statements constitute a clear and flagrant violation of the UN Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which expressly prohibits threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of states.

Iravani pointed to the “record of unjustified and unlawful joint aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran between 13 and 24 June 2025,” stating that this background makes it all the more necessary to firmly reject and condemn the recent threats issued by the U.S. President.

He emphasized that these remarks go beyond mere political rhetoric and reflect a clear intent to continue an unlawful pattern of behavior that could entail international responsibility for the United States.

The Iranian representative also recalled that on 6 November 2025, the U.S. President publicly acknowledged responsibility for and direct involvement in the June 2025 aggression—an operation that included deliberate attacks against civilians, critical infrastructure, and Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, which are subject to comprehensive safeguards under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

According to Iravani, such an admission may, under international law, give rise to individual criminal responsibility for the U.S. President and other American officials involved in grave breaches of international humanitarian law, including the crime of aggression.

Criticizing the U.S. President’s posture alongside the Prime Minister of the Israeli regime, Iravani described the stance as hypocritical, noting that the Israeli prime minister is regarded as an internationally wanted war criminal.

He said that while standing next to him, the U.S. President sought to threaten Iran and deny its inherent rights, including those explicitly recognized under the NPT, as well as Iran’s legitimate sovereign right to possess the necessary means and capabilities for lawful self-defense.

Iravani further stressed that it is deeply regrettable that such explicit threats are issued by a nuclear-armed state that also serves as the depositary of the NPT. He noted that the United States has a long and consistent record of serious violations of its treaty obligations, including attacks on the peaceful nuclear facilities of a non-nuclear-weapon state.

He added that Washington continues to provide unconditional support to, and cooperate closely with, the Israeli regime—the only possessor of nuclear weapons in West Asia—which has repeatedly threatened other countries in the region with weapons of mass destruction.

This, he said, reflects an ongoing and blatant double standard that severely undermines regional and international security and constitutes a direct assault on the integrity of the global non-proliferation regime.

The Iranian envoy also criticized the continued inaction and paralysis of the UN Security Council in the face of such explicit threats and acts of aggression, warning that this has entrenched a dangerous climate of impunity.

He argued that this failure has emboldened the United States and the Israeli regime—acting with full political, military, and diplomatic backing from Washington—to persist in their unlawful conduct, thereby posing a serious and direct threat to regional and international peace and security.

Iravani called on the Security Council, particularly its responsible members, to: first, clearly and unequivocally condemn the explicit threat of the use of force against the Islamic Republic of Iran by the United States as a grave violation of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter; second, demand that the United States immediately comply with its obligations under the Charter and international law and cease all threats or use of force; and third, act decisively and without double standards to prevent further escalation resulting from continued impunity and blatant disregard for international law.

In conclusion, Iran’s Permanent Representative warned that failure by the Security Council to act would not only further undermine international peace and security, but would also seriously damage the Council’s own credibility, authority, and legitimacy as the body entrusted with primary responsibility for maintaining global peace and security.

He reaffirmed that the Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally condemns these reckless threats and reiterates its inherent and non-derogable right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter—a right that Iran will exercise in a firm and proportionate manner should aggressive actions persist or escalate.
