Iran Sends Letter to IAEA Following Recent US Threats

Iran’s Permanent Mission has sent a letter to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warning about the serious consequences of recent US threats against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program for the global non-proliferation regime.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, In the letter, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the IAEA stressed that normalizing such threats would jeopardize the credibility of the Agency and undermine the international trust built upon its verification work. It emphasized that such reckless actions must be condemned and that those responsible should be held fully accountable.

In another part of the letter, it is emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful in nature and is carried out in full compliance with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Under Article IV of the NPT, Iran enjoys the inalienable right to develop, research, produce, and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, without discrimination. No country has any legal authority to threaten the use of force in an attempt to deny or condition these treaty-based rights.

The letter stresses that threats or attacks against nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency not only endanger civilians and the environment, but also undermine the Agency’s core mission and the international confidence built upon its verification work.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has therefore called on the Director General of the IAEA, within the framework of the Agency’s mandate, to respond firmly and explicitly by upholding the inviolability of peaceful nuclear facilities under safeguards; by opposing and condemning threats or attacks against such facilities, which are contrary to international law and the objectives of the Agency; and by acting to preserve the integrity, impartiality, and credibility of the IAEA in the face of overt intimidation against the lawful nuclear activities of a Member State.

Iran has condemned what it described as the reckless threats made by the United States and reiterated that responsibility for any consequences arising from such unlawful conduct will rest squarely with those who issue such threats or act upon them.
