According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, The Prime Minister’s remarks came in response to an inquiry from a Member of Parliament regarding whether U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance—specifically the threat of imposing a 25% tariff on goods from any country trading with Iran—would impact Malaysia’s bilateral relations or trade.
Commitment to Diplomatic Engagement
Addressing the Parliament, Anwar Ibrahim emphasised the consistency of Malaysia’s engagement with Tehran: "Our relations with this country remain firm. I have personally engaged with Iran on two occasions, and several ministers have been dispatched there. In all matters concerning international relations, we must act with wisdom," the Prime Minister stated.
Defence of Sovereignty as a Principle
The senior official further underscored that Malaysia remains committed to defending Iran’s rights and sovereignty as a matter of principle. He assured that despite external economic pressures, the core of the bilateral relationship remains unchanged.
"We continue to support and defend Iran’s rights and sovereignty. This is a principle we adhere to. As far as relations with Iran are concerned, these ties remain untouched," Anwar concluded.
