EU Officially Lists IRGC as Terrorist Organization

Following a political agreement reached by the European Union’s foreign ministers, the Council of the European Union on Thursday formally decided to add Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to the EU’s so-called terrorist list.

According to Khabaronline, The decision, which stems from a political consensus reached by the Council of the European Union on January 29, imposes a series of restrictive measures.

These include the freezing of funds and other financial assets or economic resources held within EU member states, as well as a prohibition on EU operators making funds or economic resources available to the designated entity.

As a result of Thursday’s decision, a total of 13 individuals and 23 groups and entities are now subject to restrictive measures under the EU’s designated list.

EU foreign ministers had previously agreed, in what was described by analysts as a political move, to classify the IRGC — an official military institution of Iran — as a “terrorist organization” under the bloc’s framework.

The EU’s move comes despite criticism that European foreign ministers have overlooked acts of violence and attacks allegedly carried out by affiliates of Mossad against security forces and civilians during protests recognized by the Iranian government.
