Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Iran’s participation is crucial to the success of the upcoming international meeting on the Syrian crisis

The meeting of the “Action Group on Syria,” which would be held on June 30 in Geneva, has been planned by Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League joint special envoy on Syria.

“We are ready to go. Iran must be present. Otherwise the circle of participants will be incomplete and will not gather everybody who has influence on all Syrian sides,” Lavrov told reporters on the sidelines of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Jordan.

“I think it (Iran) must be invited. There is an understanding (about this) among those who are most actively organizing it (the conference),” he stated.

The United States has vehemently opposed Iran’s participation in the conference.
