Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi announced that producing smart weapons constitutes one of his ministry's main strategies.

"Relying on and using Iran's innovative youths and experts' intelligence in producing smart defensive equipments and weapons is one of the main and important strategies of the defense ministry," Vahidi said in a ceremony in the central city of Isfahan on Monday.

He also underlined that the Iranian Navy needs strategic equipments and weapons to defend the country's water borders comprehensively and effectively, and said producing smart equipments is one of the most important measures to materialize this goal.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

The Iranian Defense Ministry in January unveiled the country's first home-made laser-guided smart munitions in a ceremony here in Tehran.

Speaking to reporters at the time, Vahidi said that the new munitions are suitable to target static and mobile targets with high precision strike.

"The laser system used in the munitions is able to track and identify targets and locate and assess their distance," he noted, adding that Iran is among the only five world countries which possess the capability to manufacture this types of munitions.

The country has repeatedly made it clear that its military might is merely based on the state's defense doctrine of deterrence and that it poses no threat to other countries.
