Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili says security is a prerequisite of progress and development, urging vigilance against plots which aim to foster insecurity and division in the region.

In a meeting with visiting Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Idris Barzani, in Tehran on Monday, Jalili said the borders between Iran and Iraq are borders of peace, friendship and progress.

“The existence of common principles, strategies, opportunities and threats will strengthen and expand capacities for friendship and cooperation,” he added.

The SNSC secretary emphasized that minor issues should not be allowed to hinder the implementation of large-scale strategies.

Barzani, for his part, said Iran and Iraq are expanding their ties in all fields, particularly in the economic field, adding that the volume of economic exchanges between Iran and KRG exceeds USD 8 billion.

Barzani arrived in Tehran at the head of a delegation on Saturday evening for a two-day official visit.

He held talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi earlier on Monday.
