Iran’s Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani says the Islamic Republic opposes any form of radicalism and extremism in the region as such moves hamper regional development.

In a meeting with visiting Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Nechirvan Idris Barzani in Tehran on Monday, Larijani added that amicable relations between the two countries promote regional stability and security.

“[Mutual] political and economic capacities should be used to establish sustainable security and peace in the region,” he stated.

The Iranian parliamentarian also emphasized that the Iranian nation has always stood by the Iraqi nation in difficult times and will continue to do so.

Larijani underlined the importance of using all potentials and opportunities to promote political, economic and technical cooperation, and voiced the Iranian parliament's support for any effort in this regard.

Barzani, for his part, said KRG officials attach significance to expansion of ties with Iran in various political, economic and cultural fields.

He voiced concern about the existence of extremist groups in the region, saying that the Iraqi nation seeks peace, progress and development in the region.

Barzani arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Saturday evening for a two-day visit to exchange views with Iranian officials on regional developments, bilateral ties, and ways to expand economic cooperation.
