Only negotiations between the supporters and opponents of the government in Syria can resolve the Arab country’s ongoing crisis, senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi says.

“[Holding] dialog and political negotiations between friendly and opposition groups inside Syria is the only way to resolve the crisis in this country,” the chairman of Iran's Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy said on Sunday.

Boroujerdi made the remark in a meeting with former Iraqi Oil Minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Olum in Iran’s capital, Tehran.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since March 2011, which has claimed the lives of thousands of Syrians including a large number of Syrian soldiers and security forces.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.

Referring to the brotherly relations between the Islamic Republic and Iraq, Boroujerdi said, “Common historical, cultural and religious roots between the Muslim people of Iran and Iraq have provided a suitable ground for expanding all-out bilateral ties.”

The Iranian lawmaker said Iran and Iraq enjoy vast capacities to strengthen and expand friendly ties, adding, “Strengthening parliamentarian relations could promote bilateral ties into new areas of close and continuous relations.”

Bahr al-Olum, for his part, stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation between the two countries and said all Iraqi groups and political movements agree on the necessity of strengthening ties with Iran.

The Iraqi official also reiterated the necessity of cooperation among regional countries to prevent the escalation of the crisis in Syria.
