“Reconciliation of Iran and US is the deep desire of Afghanistan’s officials” said Afghan Foreign Minister, Zalmai Rassoul.

Speaking to Khabar Online, Mr. Rassoul referred to the bilateral cooperation between Tehran and Kabul during the last ten years since American military forces invaded Afghanistan to suppress Taliban’s government and said:
“Undoubtedly, despite the fact that foreign forces have been operating in Afghanistan during the last decade added to the historical problems between Iran and the U.S. the ties between Tehran and Kabul have been so close and friendly.

“At the same time, we have been hopeful that Tehran and Washington resolve their political differences because it would be in the best interests of Afghanistan and the entire region”, Afghan Foreign Minister stated “By now, Afghan government has taken its utmost measures to restore the relation between Iran and the United States. We will follow this objective in future”.

The United States and Iran severed their diplomatic ties in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution, which led to the collapse of the pro-West Iranian monarchy regime led by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and later the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

The Afghan Foreign Minister went on to say: “One of the key problems that both Tehran and Kabul have been coping with is drug trafficking in the region. Elimination of this problem will benefit both countries as well as others in the region.”
