Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for a group to be established to contact both sides of the Syria crisis in order to help to restore peace and stability in the Arab state.

“A group should be established to contact both sides in order to guide issues toward establishment of tranquility, peace and understanding [in Syria],” Ahmadinejad said in a phone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Asif Ali Zardari, on Sunday.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside and accuses certain Western and regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, of arming and funding insurgents operating in the country.

The two presidents also discussed available grounds for regional and international cooperation.

Ahmadinejad stressed the need for creating the necessary structures to implement decisions of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and holding consultation sessions on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly meeting in September attended by important NAM members like Pakistan.

“The Non-Aligned Movement is an independent movement with numerous capacities, but the necessary institutions and organizations to follow up and implement its decisions have not been established yet,” the Iranian president added.

The Pakistani president, for his part, commended Iran for the successful management of the 16th NAM summit in Tehran, calling for the creation of the needed executive structures in the movement.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.

The 16th NAM summit was held in Iranian capital, Tehran, on August 26-31. The summit wrapped up after member states passed the final resolution in more than 700 paragraphs which expressed support for Iran’s nuclear energy program, rejected the United States’ unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic, and called for greater efforts to support the Palestinian cause.
