Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is to take part this week in the 18th Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in the Hague, representing the Islamic Republic as the rotating chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The news was announced Sunday by Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham, who added that Araqchi is to deliver an address to the conference on behalf of NAM member countries.

Referring to the gas attacks on Iran by the former Iraqi regime, during the 1980-1988 Iraq-Iran war, the spokeswoman said the participation of Iran which itself is a victim of chemical arms can contribute heavily to the discussions and decision-making process at the CWC event.

The week-long Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention opens on Monday at its headquarters in the Hague, the Netherlands.

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an arms control treaty which outlaws the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and their precursors. It is administered by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), an intergovernmental organization based in The Hague, the Netherlands. The treaty entered into force in 1997.
