Rare Asiatic cheetah Pirouz dies despite Iran’s conservation efforts

Pirouz, one of the last remaining Asiatic cheetahs in the world that lived under a conservation program in Iran, has died.

Head of Iran’s Central Veterinary Hospital Amir Moradi said on Tuesday that Pirouz had died earlier in the day because of kidney complications.

The cub had been born in May last year in captivity and had lived without maternal care. He was planned to be transferred to a protected wildlife park upon turning one-year-old.

Moradi said Pirouz had been in hospital for the past five days and was given dialysis which he said was unsuccessful.
