'US selling weapons to autocracies: Public opinion will judge'

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani asked the public opinion if Washington, by selling huge amounts of weaponry to autocratic regimes, is actually supporting democratic values.

In a Twitter thread on Friday, Kanaani said that the US selling huge amounts of arms to autocratic regimes contradicts its claim to protect democratic values.

He added that world public opinion will judge whether the US is an advocate of democracy and world peace.

Kanaani said that President Joe Biden's administration sold $206 billion worth of weapons in its first fiscal year (2022).

The US sold weapons to at least 142 countries in 2022, among which were 48 out of 84 countries described as autocratic, that is 57% of the world's autocracies, he said.

In response to Washington's claims, he wrote, “Slogan: Democratic values! Export: Weapons for war, slaughter, and repression!»

“The Intercept” published a report on Thursday, writing, "Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has been the world’s biggest weapons dealer, accounting for about 40 percent of all arms exports in a given year."
