'South Africa invites Iran FM to BRICS Summit 2023'

South Africa has invited the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian to attend an upcoming BRICS Summit in the country, according to Iran’s deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy.

Mehdi Safari told reporters on Monday that the meetings which will be held on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS summit on August 22-24 will be a good chance for Iran to expand cooperation in various economic, political, and security fields.

Asked to comment on the chances of Iran’s membership in the bloc, he said that the BRICS member states have not declared their criteria for accepting new members to the group.

He however noted that “with the criteria and abilities we have, we can easily adapt ourselves to their standards.”

Safari said that some 19 countries have so far applied for BRICS membership, adding that Iran was one of the first countries that submitted its request to join the bloc.

BRICS is an acronym for five major developing economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
