Over 1m health tourists visit Iran annually: Official

More than one million health tourists visit Iran each year, according to the director general of the Health Ministry’s International Cooperation section.

“We are in talks to develop health tourism protocols with other countries so that we can make use of the existing facilities to the maximum extent,” Mohammad-Hossein Niknam said during a meeting on examining the obstacles and solutions for the development of tourism diplomacy in the post-coronavirus era.

“The capacity of our country in attracting health tourists is high thanks to its experienced medical staff, lower treatment costs compared to other countries, high-quality medical services, and well-equipped specialized hospitals, in addition to tourist attractions,” he said, adding that special attention should be paid to this kind of tourism.

During the meeting, the deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy said the economic dividends of attracting health tourists are distributed among a huge number of people working in this field.

Ali-Asghar Shalbafian also announced plans to attract six million health tourists per year.

“The Foreign Ministry is at the service of developing different kinds of tourism,” he added.
