Iran has started the official registration of the potential candidates for the 9th Majlis election across the country as well as its Embassies and consular offices abroad.

The registration began at a ceremony attended by Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar and Deputy Interior Minister for Political Affairs and Head of the country's Elections Headquarters Seyyed Solat Mortazavi in the capital Tehran on Saturday.

Parliamentary hopefuls for the upcoming election, scheduled to be held on March 2, 2012, can register from December 24 to 30.

Potential candidates must have certain qualifications such as adherence to Islam as well as principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and having Iranian citizenship.

The Guardian Council, which is tasked with supervising the election, will then vet the candidates.

The last parliamentary election in Iran was held in 2008, in which Principlist bloc won the majority of seats in the 275-seat chamber.
