The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili referred to several common opportunities provided for Iran and Russia saying that the strategic cooperation between the two neighboring countries is essential and has the potential to adjust the balance of power in the best interests of nations in the region.

According to Khabar Online's political correspondent, Jalili was speaking at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev held on the sidelines of the third annual international security conference in Saint Petersburg.

Commenting on the potentials created out of "Islamic awakening" in the Middle East, Jalili said: "The constructive interaction between Tehran and Moscow will benefit the entire region through bringing security and stability."

In return, while referring to various grounds of cooperation between Iran and Russia, the secretary of Russian Security Council said: "The emergence of new international problems has made consultation and cooperation between the two countries more necessary."

Earlier, as a way out of Iran's nuclear dispute with the West powers, Russia proposed a plan titled "the step-by-step approach aimed at taking measures by the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to the questions of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran's nuclear program. However, the plan was later revised to meet the demands of Tehran.

Based on the plan proposed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Iran would enter into a new phase of negotiations on its nuclear program to ease the concerns of IAEA, and instead the West would remove a part of its economic sanctions imposed on Iran.

Russia has also said it does not approve the sanctions which go beyond the resolutions passed by the Unites Nations Security Council (UNSC). Moscow has warned as well that any military attack to Iran would bring calamitous consequences.

Patrushev then spoke on the issue of developments in Syria and stressed that both sides should improve exchange of views on the Syrian crisis. The Islamic Republic and Russia have underlined that the ongoing turmoil in Syria must be resolved in a peaceful manner without any foreign interference.

They see foreigners’ moves in Syria as a cause for the continuation of domestic violence and regard the disintegration of the country against the peace and security in the region.

Following the the international security conference, Jalili, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator met with the secretary of Armenian National Security Council Arthur Baghdasaryan.

During the meeting of both sides discussed on the issues of mutual interest and the secretary of Armenian National Security Council invited Jalili to visit Armenia.
