“I am optimistic about the final result of the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1,” Salehi said at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Tehran on Wednesday.
“The two meetings held (in Istanbul in April 2012 and in Baghdad in May 2012) were on the right track and we hope that the Moscow meeting will also proceed in a constructive way,” he added.
He called on both sides to exercise patience toward the negotiations.
Iran and the P5+1 -Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany- wrapped up their last meeting in Baghdad on Thursday May 24 after two days of negotiations.
Both sides agreed to hold another round of talks in Moscow on June 18-19.
Tehran and the P5+1 had also held three rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010, and two in Istanbul in January 2011 and in April 2012.
Commenting on the situation in Syria, Salehi said that “Tehran-Moscow viewpoints on Syria are very close and we agree on many issues.”
He repeated Iran's policy of supporting a domestic solution to the Syrian crisis, stressing that the turmoil will not be resolved through foreign interference.
The top Iranian diplomat criticized foreign supplying of arms to the Syrian opposition and said certain countries refused to give Damascus the opportunity to finalize the ongoing reforms.
“The Syrian government must be given the opportunity to fulfill its promises to the people, but it has been denied of the chance,” Salehi said.
He hoped for a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and called for an end to the ongoing violence in the country.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March 2011.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
