“Objectives of the British [government] are behind the Canadian government’s measure to close Iran's embassy in this country which will end only to the detriment of Canada,” Esmail Kowsari said on Monday.
The lawmaker stated that Iran has never severed ties with any country except the Israeli regime, adding that the Canadian government had already half-closed embassies of about 25 countries, including Iran’s, to “cover up all its economic and social problems.”
On Friday, Ottawa closed its embassy in Tehran and ordered the Iranian diplomats in Canada to leave the country within five days. The Canadian government has also frozen the bank accounts of many Iranian nationals living in Canada and banned money transfers to Iran.
Member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee emphasized that breaking off relations and the closure of Iran's Embassy in Canada were only aimed to divert the global public opinion from the social and economic problems of the country.
The legislator said Canada’s unilateral move was a sign of anger at Iran's success to hold the recent 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, adding that the Islamic Republic has dealt a heavy blow to the US, Britain and France that sought to isolate Iran.
The summit wrapped up in the Iranian capital on August 31, with the movement’s member states passing a final resolution, which included over 700 clauses.
