“Instead of being used as a tool in the hands of powerful countries to legitimize their actions, help them get what they want, and promote their values, the UN must become a place where weak countries turn to [to resolve their problems],” Salehi said.
The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks during the annual ministerial meeting of the Group of 77 and China, held on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly session.
He underlined the need for basic reforms in the UN structure and said in order for such reforms to be implemented, three principles of ‘inclusion, transparency and effectiveness’ needed to be taken into consideration.
Salehi added that the three principles could strengthen the pivotal role of the UN in the global economy and help the establishment of security.
Established in June 1964, the Group of 77 (G-77) is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations.
The group seeks to promote the collective economic interests of its members and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.
