Iranian ambassador to Russia says the main common denominator between Tehran’s and Moscow’s positions on Syria is their opposition to US and the Western plots against the country.

In an interview with Mehr News Agency on Tuesday, Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said, “The Syria issue is not a regional problem, but is an international threat. This means that the West is implementing a new formula at the international level to establish a modern dictatorship.”

The Iranian ambassador added the West is not allowed to impose its will on other nations in Syria through unconventional means and outside the framework of international law by hiring armed mercenaries to topple a popular government.

Sajjadi noted that Iran’s cooperation with Russia has been useful and prevented military intervention in Syria similar to what happened in Libya.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 and many people, including a large number of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus has repeatedly said that the chaos in the country is being orchestrated from outside, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed groups fighting against the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
