Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says Iran has reached self-sufficiency in designing and building naval equipment.

“In terms of construction, we have reached a point where we can design and produce military needs of the naval forces, including warships and sub-surface vessels, which is a great achievement for the Navy,” Sayyari said on Wednesday.

This is while we were dependent on foreigners in terms of building military equipment, training forces and holding drills before the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, he added.

He said that Jamaran domestically-built destroyer was among the military equipment designed and produced by Iran and said the Islamic Republic plans to build more modern and advanced destroyers in the future.

He said that Iran was now capable of designing, building, repairing and maintaining different kinds of surface and sub-surface vessels.

Sayyari also said that the Navy was self-sufficient in the production of different types of surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

Iran started a self-sufficiency campaign in the defense industry and launched numerous military projects after the victory of the Islamic Revolution over 30 years ago.

The Iranian navy launched its first domestically-built destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf in February 2010.

The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities.

It has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad. It also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface systems.

The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly made clear that its military might is merely based on the nation's defense doctrine of deterrence and poses no threat to other countries.
