Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff has condemned the US and European Union (EU) sanctions against the Islamic Republic as contradictory to international laws

Major General Seyyed Hassan Firouzabadi on Tuesday said the Western embargos are not only against the sovereignty and independence of nations, but also contravene the Charter of the United Nations.

He particularly criticized the United States for taking advantage of the restrictive measures as a “lever of power” to help it achieve foreign policy goals.

Firouzabadi stated that the Islamic Revolution in Iran is a human and intellectual wave which is sweeping the world, leaving the West with sanction as the last resort.

The Iranian general, however, downplayed sanctions as futile and noted that the Islamic Republic has rendered Western bans ineffective through increased research activities.

In early 2012, the US and EU imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.

The illegal US-engineered sanctions, which came into force in early summer 2012, were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that Iran's nuclear energy program has been diverted toward military purposes.
