Iran Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani says the Western media hype over Tehran’s nuclear energy program aims to disturb the situation in the region.

“Enemies try to disturb the situation in the region with their media hype and stop Iran’s progress in different fields,” Larijani told reporters on Wednesday.

He noted that the West’s media hype against Iran is because of their inveterate hostility towards the Islamic Republic, and raising the issue of Iran’s nuclear energy program is nothing but an excuse.

Larijani also referred to the unilateral sanctions imposed against Iran saying that the Iranian people can resist the enemy’s planned campaign and foil these plots with resistance and unity.

In early 2012, the US and EU imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.

The illegal US-engineered sanctions came into force in early summer 2012, based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty
and a member of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that Iran's nuclear energy program has been diverted toward military purposes.
