Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman has called on the UN members to oppose Washington’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council, saying the country is not qualified to join the international body.

Ramin Mehmanparast said on Saturday that Iran calls on the UN members, especially the developing countries, to oppose the membership of the United States in the Human Rights Council in the upcoming General Assembly voting slated for November 12.

He added that, the United States is not qualified to nominate for the membership in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as the country is one of the worst violators of human rights in the world.

Mehmanparast emphasized that due to its negative human rights records and violation of international conventions and treaties, Washington is not qualified to be a member of the council which is the most important international human rights body.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said according to the council’s statute, only countries with a clean human rights record have the right to join UNHRC mentioning Washington’s involvement in killing civilians, torturing people in secret prisons and anti-Islam campaign as some examples of the US human rights violations.

Earlier this week, the Iranian mission to the UN strongly criticized human rights situation in the Western countries, including the US and Canada.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Thursday, a member of the Iranian mission enumerated various cases of human rights abuses in certain Western countries, criticizing the West’s biased approach and double standards toward the issue of rights in other countries.
