An Iranian lawmaker says Iran has no intention to carry out an act of aggression against any country, stressing that the ongoing naval drills are aimed at giving a firm response to those regimes which covet regional energy resources.

“Holding of the Velayat 91 maneuvers is a firm response to those regimes that covet the energy [resources] of the region,” member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Evaz Heidarpour Shahrezaei said on Monday.

He added that the naval exercises convey Iran’s clear message to countries which seek to carry out certain moves in the Persian Gulf [to let them know] that the Islamic Republic is completely ready to defend its air, land and sea borders.

The enemy knows that if it commits any mistake about Iran, it will face the crushing response of the country’s Armed Forces.

Iran’s Navy launched six-day Velayat 91 naval exercises on December 28 in a vast area from the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman and northern parts of the Indian Ocean to display the country’s capabilities in defending its maritime borders.

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defensive capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
