The consignment was handed to a delegation of Lebanese aid workers through an official ceremony in Beirut port on Wednesday, attended by Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi and Ramzi Naeman, an advisor to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
The Iranian ambassador said the humanitarian assistance marks Iran’s solidarity with Syria, reaffirming the Islamic Republic’s support for the Syrian people and government in their effort to restore peace and security and achieving a political solution to the country’s crisis.
Head of the Lebanese delegation, Brigadier General Ibrahim Bashir, thanked Iran on behalf of the Lebanese prime minister for supporting the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, noting that the aid will be distributed among all refugees without discrimination.
Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest, which has killed many people including large numbers of security personnel.
The prolonged violence in the Arab country has forced many of its citizens, including Palestinian refugees in the country, to migrate to neighboring states such as Lebanon.
According to the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, some 150,000 people coming from Syria have taken refuge in Lebanon over the past months.
The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and certain Western states and their regional allies such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have been trying to fuel the turmoil.
