Russian Ambassador to Iran Leone Jagarian says Moscow has always opposed unilateral sanctions imposed against Tehran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Stressing Russia’s stance against the West’s unilateral sanctions on Iran, Jagarian said on Saturday that Moscow seeks an all-out expansion of ties with the Islamic Republic.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Washington and the European Union have used the allegations as a pretext to impose illegal unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran refutes the allegations and argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Jagarian added that the 10th Iran-Russia joint economic commission would soon be held in Moscow with the presence of the Iranian and Russian foreign ministers in order to expand bilateral ties.

Iran's Ambassador to Moscow Reza Sajjadi said on January 14 that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi would visit Moscow to take part in the annual meeting of the Russian-Iranian Business Council (RIBC) on February 11-12.

Sajjadi added that the RIBC was expected to discuss expansion of trade as well as industrial, transportation, energy and consular cooperation between the two countries.

The RIBC was formed in 2006 and the two countries have signed documents for expanding bilateral economic cooperation in various fields such as nuclear energy, oil, gas, industry and tourism.

Head of the Foreign Relations Department at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries Vladimir Padalko said on January 10 that “Moscow will continue its trade cooperation with Iran and no problem can deter the development of trade relations between the two countries.”
