The United States must renounce its policy of “threats and sanctions” against the Islamic Republic before Iran considers entering talks with Washington, an Iranian lawmaker says.

“The US must give up its threats and sanctions and announce that it would hold negotiations with Iran under equal footing and based on international laws,” said Ebrahim Aqa-Mohammadi, a member of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Sunday.

“The US must recognize Iran’s rights,” he said.

On February 2, US Vice President Joe Biden said his country was ready to hold direct talks with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

Four days later, the US government imposed new sanctions on Iran. The sanctions target Iran's oil revenues.

On February 6, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei rejected talks with the United States under pressure and threats.

Aqa-Mohammadi further noted that, “The US must recognize Iran’s rights, remove the sanctions and return Iran’s blocked assets.”

“If the US is not willing to recognize Iran’s right with regard to the nuclear energy issue and keeps its forces behind Iran’s doors for an attack, the issue of negotiations does not make any sense,” he concluded.
