An Iranian lawmaker has dismissed as propaganda claims of a civil war in Syria by certain media outlets, saying the crisis has been instigated by the West and some of its Arab allies.

“Through their propaganda, the Western and Arab media try to portray the crisis in Syria as a civil war, but the crisis is in fact a full-scale war by the West and some Arabs on Syria,” said Mohammad Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of Iran's Majlis Councils and Internal Affairs Committee on Sunday.

“For approximately two years, the West, in cahoots with the Arabs and Zionists, has turned Syria into a burnt land in an attempt to exhaust the patience of the Syrian nation and the legitimate and legal system of [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad in their resistance [against Israel],” he added.

“During the attack of the terrorists on Syria, the sinister alliance of imperialism and Zionism trained all those forces in some regional countries and then dispatched them for battle to Syria,” the Iranian lawmaker said.

If it were not for the West’s support for the foreign-backed militants, the crisis in Syria would have been resolved within a few weeks, he pointed out.

Rezaei further dismissed the allegations of the West and their Arab allies about Iran’s military support for Assad’s government and described the claims as “psychological projection and forward escaping” tactics.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting in the country are foreign nationals.
