A senior Iranian lawmaker says a possible US military intervention in Syria will “inflict the highest damage” on the Israeli regime.

“A US military strike against Syria is aimed at safeguarding Israel’s security. But the Americans fail [to see] that this military aggression will inflict the highest damage on the Zionist regime [of Israel],” Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said on Wednesday.

Naqavi Hosseini, who is the spokesman of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, added that the US has been after a military solution in Syria for some time now.

“When there was a political solution to the Syria crisis the Americans refused it so that the way would be paved for a military solution,” he added.

The war rhetoric against Syria first gained momentum on August 21, when the militants operating inside the country and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed that 1,300 people had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar.

Following the claims, the United States and a number of its allies were quick to engage in a major propaganda campaign to promote war against Syria despite the fact that Damascus has categorically rejected being behind the attack.

On August 31, US President Barack Obama said he would seek congressional authorization for an attack against Syria as Washington “cannot and will not turn a blind eye” to the alleged chemical attack in the Arab state. The Obama administration has, however, said it “has the right” to attack Syria even if the Congress does not approve the measure.

Iran, Russia and China, among other countries, have warned against foreign military intervention in Syria, which has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011.
