“What we heard from the Iranian leadership is unfortunately just sugar-colored words, words designed to deceive, words designed to lull the international community into complacency,” Mark Regev said on Friday.
“The simple fact is that Iran continues to enrich uranium, continues to move aggressively forward to have a nuclear weapon and this must stop,” the Israeli official charged.
Regev’s remarks came after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that Iran would never develop nuclear weapons and has never pursued that path under its peaceful nuclear energy program.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.
Tehran strongly rejects the claim, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence showing that the Iranian nuclear program has been diverted toward non-civilian objectives.
Israel’s latest allegations come as it is widely believed to the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, with 200-400 nuclear warheads.
The Israeli regime rejects all the regulatory international nuclear agreements, particularly the NPT, and refuses to allow its nuclear facilities to come under international regulatory inspections.
