“The international community has come to understand that the issue of Syria can only be settled through political means, and we are witnessing that they are leaning toward this very direction,” Larijani said on Tuesday.
Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with a Syrian parliamentary delegation on the sidelines of the 129th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva.
Syria has been gripped by deadly turmoil since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
The top Iranian parliamentarian also called on the Syrian delegation to attend international conferences to further open the eyes of the world to the atrocities committed at the hands of the terrorists in Syria.
Larijani also expressed hope for the restoration of stability to Syria.
The Syrian delegation, for its part, thanked the Iranian Majlis speaker and said the foreign-backed militants have failed in their plots against Syria thanks to the people’s unity and resistance.
On October 7, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow and Washington had agreed to push for holding the Geneva II conference on the crisis in Syria in mid-November.
Russia and the US had agreed in May to hold the conference, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has expressed readiness to take part in the Geneva II conference, stressing, though, that he will not negotiate with terrorists.
