Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will likely pay a visit to Germany late in January to participate in the 50th Munich Security Conference.

German Der Spiegel weekly wrote in its recent edition that Berlin, which has lagged behind its other European neighbors in resuming extensive relations with Tehran, has invited President Rouhani for the visit.

“And President Rouhani will likely visit Germany late January to take part in the 50th Munich Security Conference,” Der Spiegel reported.

The Munich Security Conference has become the major security policy conference worldwide. Each year, since 1962, it brings together senior figures from around the world to engage in a debate on current and future security challenges.

Each year, some 350 participants from 40 countries discuss in depth their views on the development of transatlantic relations as well as European and global security. Invitees include Presidents, Ministers, members of Parliament, high-ranking representatives of the armed forces, scientists, and media representatives. The Munich Security Conference addresses the main security issues of our time and the potential future ones.

The invitation for the Iranian president to attend the conference came after many European states voiced eagerness to further develop their ties with Tehran following the endorsement of a six-month interim agreement in Geneva on November 24 by Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, France, China and Britain plus Germany) to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.
