Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that Tehran attaches great importance to expanding relations with the Persian Gulf countries as a priority of its foreign policy.

Improved relations with the Persian Gulf littoral states is top priority of Iran’s foreign policy, Zarif told reporters in the Central city of Isfahan on Wednesday.

He expressed the hope that Iran would build excellent relations with the Persian Gulf countries.

Upon election as Iran’s new president, President Hassan Rouhani also underlined Tehran's policy of good relations with all the neighboring states, and said his government will make more efforts to promote ties with the Persian Gulf littoral states, specially Saudi Arabia.

"The Persian Gulf region and the Arab countries are important strategically. The Persian Gulf littoral states are our neighbors and brothers, but Saudi Arabia in addition to being our brother and neighbor hosts the Muslim Kiblah and we have highly close cultural, historical and regional ties with each other," Rouhani said in his first press conference after winning the presidential election.
