Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov conferred on the latest developments in the two countries' bilateral relations and regional issues, specially the Syrian crisis, in a meeting in Moscow on Thursday

During the meeting, Zarif expressed satisfaction in the current level of Tehran-Moscow cooperation, stressing the two will continue growing relations.

He said Iran and Russia have been enjoying important relations as two old neighbors.

Tehran-Moscow relations, he said, are in line with their bilateral strategic interests.

Zarif added that a meeting in September 2013 of the two countries presidents in Kyrgyzstan has prepared the ground for fostering bilateral ties between the two capitals.

Iran attaches importance to its relations with Russia regarding issues related to the Caspian Sea, said the Iranian foreign minister who arrived in Moscow late Wednesday night from Damascus.

He added there are considerable capacities for the two countries to strengthen bilateral ties.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on global and regional concerns including extremism and terrorism.

Referring to Russia important role to prevent a new war in the Middle-East and Syria, Zarif underlined that Moscow can play more effective role in the upcoming Geneva II conference on Syria.

International Conference on Syria will be held on January 22 with the participation of representatives from several countries, the Syrian government officials and opponents.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underlined that Tehran is in favor of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups to create stability in the Middle Eastern country.

In November 2012, Iran hosted a meeting between the representatives of the Syrian government and opposition to encourage them to start talks to find a political solution to their problems. The National Dialogue Conference kicked off work in Tehran mid November with the motto of 'No to Violence, Yes to Democracy".

The meeting brought together almost 200 representatives of various Syrian ethnicities, political groups, minorities, the opposition, and state officials.
